Which molecular editor do you use and why?
2009 June 26
Recently ChemSpider man Antony Williams raised the issue of molecular editors on a LinkedIn group discussion. He suggests that price for most of editors has dropped dramatically because there are several good commercial editors available in market. Last but not least most of companies are offering editors for free to academia and home users, and in that case what would convince you to switch from commercial to open source editor? Does commercial structure molecular editors are good value for money? Are you well satisfied with your favorite molecular editor, or still looking for a better product? In either case you will require a decent comparison matrix of molecular editors. Last year Tamas Gunda compiled a detailed comparison of few commercial editors, you can find the complete review here. To create a comprehensive comparison of molecule editors and also to make your job easier I have created a fairly detailed survey for all major molecular editors with a comparison matrix, all you need is to complete your part by selecting the features associated with editors you are familiar. You can take your survey here or you can use Structure/Molecular Editor Survey section at right hand sidebar of this page. You can add additional comments about your editor in comment section of this post especially which molecular editor do you use and why? Once the survey is complete this page will be updated with results and a crowd sourced comparison matrix. Thanks for your time and effort!
